While play oriented therapy can be a good option for some children, others may need therapies which are directed at specific behaviors and issues. When this is the case, therapists using Applied Behavior Analysis Lake Charles LA can often be of assistance. Whereas, there are also a number of clinics such as Sprouts and Milestones which offer a combination of therapies.

Applied Behavior Analysis or ABA, is often used to diagnose a number of behavioral issues in adults and children. Like play therapy, it is a therapeutic process which focuses on changing or eliminating negative behaviors. In simplest terms, it is a process designed to change the environment in order to change behavior.

As the recognized science of behavior, ABA has a long history as an accepted and acknowledged practice. The practice actually dates back to the early 20th century. For, the underlying philosophy on which the practice is based comes from an earlier practice known as behaviorism. In behaviorism, people were also taught that by changing the environment, one would be more successful in changing behavioral patterns and overcoming emotional issues.

Most often, the studies have proven over and over again that behavioral issues are a product of circumstance such as environment and surroundings. Whereas, Applied Behavior therapists have been using this information to develop and treat various behavioral issues while improving the lives of children and adults. As the approach has largely been based on consequences of behavior, techniques have generally involved teaching individuals better ways of controlling negative behavioral patterns.

ABA has been acknowledged as a valid form of therapy for quite some time. During this time, the practice has been used for everything from rehabilitation, safety intervention, brain injuries, dementia and substance abuse to training parents on how to deal with difficult children. While this is the case, the first practical applications of ABA were used to treat children with intellectual disabilities and autism, a practice which has now gained recognition in the broader field of psychology.

The therapy has also been used in teaching children the importance of setting reasonable goals and breaking down large tasks into smaller ones. In doing so, most therapists create environments which reinforce good behavior while changing or eliminating negative behavior and responses. In addition, the application provides children with a sense that learning can be fun rather than frustrating or scary.

ABA therapies are currently the only treatment for children displaying signs of autism spectrum disorder. Whether due to the fact that ABA is backed with over 40 years of research showing long lasting improvement, or scientific proof, it continues to be the best treatment available to date. During and after treatment, most therapists assign goals and deadlines which are monitored closely either by the therapist, parents or guardians of the children.

Research studies have been completed which show that autistic children participating in ABA programs have also improved when it comes to social interaction and cognitive abilities. While this is the case, it should be noted that children involved in these programs received intensive therapeutic treatment of thirty five hours or more per week for a period of two years. Although, other studies suggest that this time can be cut in half with the right ABA therapist.
