The father of Marcus happens to be one of the commanders of the Legion. Marcus is a centurion in a group of second Legion. His uncle who retired serving takes him to his home.
He lived with his uncle his leg slowly recovering. He attended Saturnalia Games where he bought a gladiator by the name Enter Esca who had lost a fight. He employs him as his servant. The two later that they share much in common. The father of Esca had served as a soldier and had disappeared the same way as that of Marcus. They came to like each other and had a close relationship.
There come rumors that Ninth eagle has been seen with other tribes. Marcus gives his servant freedom as long as he is to remain loyal. They leave together to determine whether the rumors are true. They reach a place called Dun which is led by Derdgian and stay there for a short while. Marcus attends a ceremony and is astonished to see a priest with the eagle of the Legion. The eagle does not have its wings. He knows very well the Ninth must have been killed trying to protect it. Marcus learns that it is not guarded and has an aim of stealing it. In the night they are to leave, Esca does steal it and hides it.
The two leave without difficulties but are caught up by the tribes, midway in their journey. Marcus pretends to be confused and they allow the tribes to search him. They find no eagle and continue in search of it. Esca returns to the place he hid the eagle and recovers it. The two now have to run for their safety.
The two have to hurry up. This is because they are being pursued. They have to have to fear even those who are unaware of them. This is however difficult because the condition of the leg of Marcus, although they cannot risk stopping. They are spotted again although this time by a few of them. They run into a building to hide. At long last they are able to run for safety.
Finally, they make it to the home of Marcus uncle. They forward it to him as they celebrate their victory upon returning it rallies the tribes against them. Unfortunately, the coming back of Eagle of Ninth is not enough to reform it. The achievement of Marcus is somehow diminished.
